since 2002, we've always removed our smoke detectors. They are also surveillance devices, that pick up audio and transmit to local repeaters and have been tested to emit a VHF signal. Smoke detectors are a common intelligence agency spy device since the 1980s.

I have to say that this is a new one for me, but is no surprise.
The house is a rental, so would just removing the battery work, or just take all the whole damn things down?
Any safe alternatives to smoke detectors? Please do share. :)
